East Lawrence power outage affects about 1,300 residents

A construction-related accident caused a power outage in East Lawrence this morning that affected about 1,300 residents, including Kennedy Elementary.

About 9:45 a.m., workers operating a backhoe at the Douglas County Fairgrounds caused the outage by accidentally damaging some power equipment, said Erin La Row, a Westar Energy spokeswoman.

Kennedy classes continued as planned, but the school’s phone and computer services do not work. The school district notified Kennedy parents of the outage, said Julie Boyle, a Lawrence school district spokeswoman.

At about noon, Westar had restored power to all except the school and about 280 residents, and their power was completely restored this afternoon.
