From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 2, 1973:

• Well-known Lawrence resident Elgin Woody was honored this week with the announcement that Lawrence’s Lincoln Park at Second and Maine would henceforth be known as Elgin Woody Park. Lawrence Mayor John Emick attended the special services at Ninth Street Baptist Church and presented Woody with the key to the city. Woody, then 84 years old, was a native of Lawrence who had a long history of involvement in local sports programs, especially at Lincoln Park. He had frequently coached and sponsored teams known as Woody’s Aces. “He’s always cheerful, always brightens the day for folks,” said Mayor Emick, “and since he’s known as the Mayor of Lincoln Park, there is only one name that can appear on it — Elgin Woody Park.”
• The chief of the newly-formed National Cancer Institute said that the Kansas University Medical Center stood “a very good chance” of being selected for the establishment of a comprehensive cancer center. Dr. Frank J. Rauscher, Jr., said that KU Med was in the running for selection as one of 15 centers to be established by the National Cancer Act of 1971. The medical center had been awarded a grant last year for $68,075 for the study of the chemical treatment of malignant diseases.
