Baldwin City

Baldwin High boys soccer needed a tie against De Soto on Tuesday to win the Frontier League and were little more than five minutes away from doing so. But a Wildcats goal with 5:25 to play ended the Bulldogs’ chances.

“I thought we tired a little bit,” Baldwin coach Mark Joslyn told the Baldwin City Signal of the 1-0 loss. “We just couldn’t finish shots.”

The Bulldogs (14-2) picked up just their second loss this season, their only other loss also a 1-0 defeat against De Soto.

De Soto

De Soto’s Paige Williams defeated Wichita Collegiate’s Jaya Mantovani (6-3, 3-6, 6-1) to earn third place in the Class 4A state tennis tournament on Monday in Baldwin City.

Williams advanced to the tournament’s semifinal by defeating Winfield’s Emily Samacki (6-2, 6-2) before looking to Wichita Collegiate’s Brooke Withrow (6-0, 6-0).

Eudora sophomore Jon Miller placed eighth to lead all Cardinals runners last Saturday in Paola’s Frontier League championship meet. Miller finished with a time of 17:42. Three girls runners also medaled. Senior Danelle Topil led the girls in placing 12th with a time of 16:24. Topil was trailed by junior Anna Brown in 17th place with a time of 16:49 and junior Kelsey Balluch with a time of 17:10.

On Saturday, the Cardinals will travel to Anderson County to compete in the Class 4A regional meet.

Shawnee

Mill Valley volleyball clinched its first undefeated run in Kaw Valley League play since 2003 after Tuesday’s 3-0 victory at Piper (25-14, 25-12, 25-17). On Saturday, the Jaguars travel to Leavenworth for sub-state, where they will meet Schlagle, Washington, Lansing, Leavenworth, Shawnee Heights, Topeka West and Topeka-Seaman.

Meanwhile, Mill Valley’s 6-1 football team earned a trio of honors this week. Head coach Joel Applebee was selected the Kansas City Chiefs Coach of the Week, and senior running back Kendall Short was named Hy-Vee Athlete of the Week for 41 Action Sports. The Jaguars were also honored as the Hy-Vee Team of the Week. The Jaguars host senior night at 7 p.m. Friday in the second game of district play against Washington.
