From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 14, 1912:

• “The city school children again have water to drink while attending school in the various buildings of the town. Acting upon a report from the water analysis department of the University, the health board of the board of education this morning ordered all fountains opened in all buildings. The water is now on and is being used by the pupils. The city water was turned off a month ago by order of the school board, following a report from the University that the water was unfit to drink. The board ordered that the fountains be closed and that the children be not allowed to drink this city water. Since that time the school children have had no water to drink unless they carried it themselves. Considerable complaint was made but the board held that the water was not fit for use and decided to leave the fountains closed until such time as pure water was announced by the K. U. water experts.”
• “Manager W. O. Hamilton has a novel scheme for advertising the Kansas-Missouri football game which will be played in Lawrence on November 23rd. Manager Hamilton has made arrangements with the newspaper offices to print a small announcement of the game on all envelopes that are brought into the offices by business men who wish to line up in the booster crowd and pull for a big crowd in Lawrence on the day of that game. All merchants who will bring their envelopes to the offices may have a small adv. or announcement printed beneath the return, free of expense to them. This is to advertise the game over the state. They are urged by the Kansas manager to have as many envelopes printed in this way as they will be able to use between now and the date of the game. Following is the adv. which will be printed on the envelopes: ‘Twenty-first Annual KANSAS – MISSOURI Football Game at Lawrence, November 23. Write W. O. Hamilton, General Manager of Athletics, for Particulars.’ Manager Hamilton is also having a large number of envelopes printed which will be given to all students. He will have them in all of the buildings on the hill and students are urged to use them in writing letters home. The manager believe that this will be one of the best advertising schemes that he could devise and is looking for it to bring a monster crowd to Lawrence on November 23rd for the annual Kansas-Missouri contest.”
