• Young Nathan Berg of Lawrence had appeared this past weekend on CBS-TV’s “Sunday Morning” program. Berg, 15, who had made local news earlier this year when he had decided to bypass high school to study jazz at North Texas State, had been interviewed by CBS in July at a jazz camp at the University of Louisville. His father, Chuck Berg, said that his son was very happy with his choice. “He loves school, his classes and teachers and all the people he’s working with,” Berg said. “Everyone who is a jazz studies major is very devoted. He likes that atmosphere.”
• Discussing the proposed policy of selective admissions for Kansas University and other state universities today, KU Chancellor Gene Budig said that if the state were to change the 72-year-old open-admissions policy, it must assure higher education officials that their institutions would not suffer financially. “We continue to support the efforts of the regents in strengthening the preparation of high school students in Kansas who want to attend college,” Budig said this weekend. He added his concern that the universities “must be assured that changes in the admission process will not result in a loss of base budget support.”
