25 years ago: LHS wins state football championship

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 30, 1987:

  • The “small but gritty” Lawrence High School Lions defeated the previously undefeated, top-ranked Manhattan High School football team this week, 17-12, in the Class 6A state title game at KSU Stadium. The title marked the second for LHS in two years and the third in the past four seasons.
  • The State of Kansas had begun receiving money from the two-week-old Kansas Lottery, but a new plan to divert the revenues was making some people nervous. Lawmakers had originally stated that the money would be used mainly for new programs to create new jobs and economic growth. However, some economic development advocates were worried that Gov. Mike Hayden’s new budget, to be presented in January to the Kansas Legislature, would use the lottery’s expected $10 million to $20 million to replace funding in existing programs, rather than to fund new ones.
