40 years ago: No street decorations for downtown this Christmas

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 20, 1972:

  • With the Christmas shopping season in downtown Lawrence to start the day after Thanksgiving, decoration of Massachusetts Street was being left entirely up to the individual businesses. The Downtown Lawrence Association had decided to skip the street decorations this year because in the wake of street construction there were not yet any utility poles or trees to hang them on.
  • The Kansas Corporation Commission had approved rate increases for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co., to take effect Nov. 25. All business and residential charges in the Lawrence area were expected to increase, including city one-party and two-party lines and rural eight-party lines. However, an extra charge for color telephones had been eliminated and installation and service connection charges were to remain unchanged.
