Tonganoxie soccer falls in final

? Tonganoxie High’s soccer team struggled to create scoring opportunities and couldn’t match Topeka Hayden’s offensive firepower in a 5-1 loss in the Class 4-1A state title match Saturday at Piper.

Hayden (20-1) took the lead less than 10 minutes into the game when Conner Beck headed a pass from Pedro Ortega past THS goalkeeper Keaton Truesdell. Beck, who had four goals to lead the Wildcats, scored again with 7:16 left in the half, and Hayden took a 2-0 advantage into the break.

THS (16-4-1) got its only score of the day midway through the period on a penalty kick by senior Matt Saathoff, who finished the season with a team-high 31 goals.

The second-place finish is the best-ever for Tonganoxie, which had never advanced farther than the state quarterfinals prior to this season.
