Parking at Kansas University was to become an even more valued commodity in the fall. According to Donna Hultine, assistant director of KU’s Parking Services, blue-zone permits, usually reserved for top administrators and senior faculty, were rising from $52 to $70 annually. The campus pass, giving drivers access to Mount Oread, was to increase from $17 to $30, bringing the total for on-hill parking to $100. Red and yellow zone permits were also in line for an increase, as were parking violation fees. Hultine said that the increases were to go partly to pay for a proposed $5 million multi-level parking garage planned for the campus for 1989. A Chicago consultant recently had told the department that KU would be short about 3,600 parking spaces by 1996, with a more immediate need for 1,000 spaces by fall 1988. By 1989, cars would outnumber spaces by 3 percent, the consultant’s report said.
