From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 30, 1912:

• “Today is Decoration Day and the event is being fittingly observed in Lawrence. At noon the town assumed a holiday air and all business was practically suspended. This morning the old veterans and others from town went to the cemeteries where the graves were decorated and patriotic exercises held in memory of the dead…. The day is a legal holiday and all the stores closed at noon. There was but one delivery of the mail…. This afternoon at Woodland Park the two local companies of National Guards will occupy the field and put on a war maneuver for the town people who visit the park. Tonight there will be a concert at the park by the First Regimental Band.”
• “Tomorrow night at the Bowersock Opera House the class of 1912 of the Lawrence High School will graduate. Seventy-nine Seniors will receive their diplomas and officially close their high school careers. The exercises will be held in the new opera house for the first time and will will no doubt be well filled on this occasion.”
• “In the window of the L. L. Phillips store is a very appropriate display of old firearms that have been through the Civil War. Some of them were captured from bushwhackers and others were used in several battles. There are also two swords and an old flag, making an interesting exhibit.”
• “Wilbur Wright is dead. The end came to the famous inventor at his home in Dayton this morning after a lingering sickness. Wright has been suffering with typhoid fever for several weeks and little hope has been held out for his recovery.”
