Problems with the state’s vehicle title and registration system Monday slowed down the process at county treasurer offices across the state.

But drivers will get a break in the form of a one-month extension to renew vehicle tags or get license plates for new vehicles, according to a news release from the Kansas Department of Revenue.

Extensions for tags that expire April 30 go until May 31, while those expiring May 31 will have until June 29 to renew. In addition, 30-day permits will receive an extension until June 29. The Department of Revenue worked with law enforcement across the state to coordinate the grace periods, according to the news release.

The state has been working with the vendor of the computer system, 3M, to correct the problems. The division is in the midst of a $40 million computer upgrade that will integrate driver’s license records with vehicle title and registration data.

Drivers who have the same insurance and address as last year can renew online at ksrevenue.org.

Last week, an unrelated problem with the state system shut down computers at state motor vehicle offices that process driver’s license applications and renewals.
