LHS, FSHS baseball to meet again in regionals

Get ready for another baseball city showdown.

Lawrence High and Free State High will meet for the third game in a row, this time with a spot in a regional championship game on the line.

The No. 3 seed Lions (12-8), which swept the No. 6 seed Firebirds (8-12) this past week to close the regular season, play at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at CBAC, in Olathe. The winner plays either No. 2 Olathe Northwest (12-8) or No. 7 Topeka-Washburn Rural (7-13) at 7 p.m.

Tuesday will be busy for sports programs at both city schools.

Free State girls soccer is the only team granted the luxury of hosting a playoff game. The No. 4 seed Firebirds (10-4-2) welcome No. 5 Gardner-Edgerton (5-11) at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Free State beat GEHS, 2-0, on April 23.

LHS softball (5-15) received the No. 6 seed in its regional, and, like the city baseball teams, will play Tuesday at CBAC. The Lions face No. 3 Topeka (14-6) at 4:45 p.m.

Lawrence’s girls soccer team (3-13), meanwhile, was seeded seventh and heads to No. 2 Manhattan (13-2-1) for a 6 p.m. Tuesday playoff game.

FSHS softball doesn’t start its postseason until Wednesday. The No. 4 seed Firebirds (12-7) meet No. 5 Manhattan (10-10) at 2 p.m. at Washburn Rural. A win would advance Free State to a 5 p.m. regional title game.
