Sertoma announces barbecue winners

Four Men and a Pig won a ticket to October’s American Royal Barbecue Invitational by being named overall grand champions of this year’s Sertoma 48 BBQ competition.

The Lawrence Sertoma Club’s 14th annual barbecue cook-off took place Saturday at Broken Arrow Park.

The Kansas City Barbeque Society-sanctioned competition — named for its 48-team field and $4,800 in prize money — has raised more than $180,000 for Lawrence charities over the years.

Reserve grand champion at this year’s event was Ribs 4 U. Judges also named champions in the following four meat categories:

Chicken: Passions of the Pit, first place; Ribs 4 U, second; and Four Men and a Pig, third.

Pork Ribs: True Bud BBQ, first; PDT, second; and Four Men and a Pig, third.

Pork Shoulder: Pork’N Mindy, first; Bayou Style BBQ, second; and Crimson and Blue BBQ, third.

Beef Brisket: Hot Meat Smokers, first; Four Men and a Pig, second; and My Three Sons, third.

The Sertoma 48 BBQ also included a Peoples’ Choice competition, where, for a $6 donation, hungry event-goers could taste a variety of barbecue dishes and vote for their favorite.

Peoples’ Choice awards for Session A went to Piggy’s Going Postal, first; and Rub’N Wood, second. Rub Me Tender, Rub Me Sweet and Dead Last BBQ tied for third. Session B Peoples’ Choice winners were Mad Hogs and an Englishman, first; BMB BBQ, second; and Broken Toe BBQ, third.
