25 years ago: Last Liberty Memorial teacher retires from LHS

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 7, 1987:

  • A bit of local confusion was following in the wake of November’s vote to add a liquor-by-the-drink amendment in Kansas. Lawrence city commissioners were scheduled to consider an ordinance that would allow Sunday sales of 3.2 percent beer at restaurants. Private clubs were already permitted to sell beer on Sundays, but Lawrence city code then prohibited all other Sunday liquor sales.State law, however, now allowed the sales, so Lawrence officials needed to change local regulations to match state law.
  • It was the end of an era at Lawrence High School. With the imminent retirement of Bill Lassman, the school was losing the last teacher who had also taught at the old Liberty Memorial High School. After teaching printing to students for the past 38 years, Lassman said he took pride in having trained many pressmen still working in the area.
