25 years ago: New lighting for KU campus

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 20, 1987:

Work had been proceeding since about the beginning of March on new lighting at Kansas University. An estimated $100,000 in new lights were being installed in front of Wescoe Hall and other sites along KU’s Jayhawk Boulevard in order to improve safety for nighttime pedestrians. The local firm of Huxtable & Associations Inc. was in charge of the project.

Takeru Higuchi was in critical condition at the University of Missouri-Columbia Hospital after having undergone coronary bypass surgery this week. Higuchi was the chairman of Oread Laboratories of Lawrence and an internationally noted KU professor of pharmaceutical chemistry.

Voter registration for the upcoming Lawrence city elections was showing a surge of 270 new voters since the March 3 city primary, according to Douglas County Clerk Patty Jaimes, who attributed the increase to interest in the downtown mall questions scheduled to appear on the ballot.
