From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 12, 1972:

• One person was missing and four injured after a fire that had destroyed an old hotel in downtown Osawatomie. Only eight people had been in the three-story, 56year-old John Brown Hotel when the blaze had been discovered at about 4:45 a.m. on the previous day. The missing man, a regular resident at the hotel, had not yet been identified. One couple, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hamilton of Kansas City, Kan., had jumped from a second-floor window to escape the flames, with Mr. Hamilton breaking his leg in the fall. Mrs. Frances Rivers had suffered severe cuts to her arm when she had broken a window to pass her two children, ages 9 and 6, to a passerby.
• At about midnight on a recent night, Lawrence police had received a call about a “large dog” walking down the middle of the road in the 800 block of Pennsylvania Street. The caller was concerned because the animal was not moving out of the way of vehicles and might be hit. Upon responding, officers discovered that the creature was not a dog, but a goat. They delivered it to the Lawrence Livestock Sales Barn, 900 E. 11th, and it remained there today waiting for its owner to claim it.
