100 years ago: Duplicate cats cause confusion

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 7, 1912:

“WANTED – AN OWNER FOR THIS ANGORA CAT. Its Mystery Dark and Startling. — If a cat has nine lives is it possible for the animal to take two of them and put one in Lawrence and one in Kansas City? That is the question that certain members of the KU faculty who study such problems are trying to solve and one that is perplexing a number of residents of Lawrence…. When Prof. E. H. S. Bailey and his family prepared to go to Europe for an extended stay they found that they could not take along Peter Pan, their fine white Angora cat. But it was easy to solve that problem for Dr. Will Bailey, a son of Prof. Bailey, was glad to take Peter Pan with him to Kansas City, where he is practicing…. One day last week there arrived in Lawrence unheralded a white Angora cat. That is, the animal evidently had been white, but it was a sorry looking cat, its white fur bedraggled and a most piteous expression in its eyes. Straight to the Bailey residence went the cat, Homesick, Oh so Homesick! He scratched and scratched and most plaintively did he sing: ‘Oh take me back, Oh take me ba-a-ck, Back to Lawrence Land.’ So plaintive was his refrain that Mrs. J. W. O’Bryon heard it and took him in. Poor Peter Pan. Think of a cat trudging 40 miles through snow and slush to come back home and find that home was no more…. Newspapers ran columns about him, pictures were made of him and scientists talked of the marvels of the Cat-brain. Marvelous! … This morning there came a death-dealing blow to all the theories when Dr. Will Bailey sent word here that the cat is not Peter Pan at all, but that Peter Pan, fat and happy, is enjoying a placid existence with the doctor in Kansas City. Just who this cat is, no one can tell for he looks so much like the original. What is the solution? Can it be that Peter Pan in Kansas City, deciding that nine lives are too many, took one of his lives and set it up in the ‘Person’ of the cat at the O’Bryon home? Who knows?”
