From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 6, 1987:

A canvass of the ballots of last week’s primary election revealed that eight ballots from seven precincts were missing. The ballots from those precincts were to be run through the electronic counting machine again, and then, if a discrepancy still showed, they were to be hand-counted. Two judges, one each from the Democratic and Republican parties, were to oversee the process. County Clerk Patty Jaimes said that missing ballots were not unusual in elections, but in this case, they could have made a difference in the outcome. The sixth- and seventh-place finishers in the race, Ellis Hayden and David Longhurst, had been separated by only five votes according to the unofficial count. The top six vote-getters last week were to go on to the April election for three available City Commission seats.
