25 years ago: KU emissions run afoul of EPA regulations

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 29, 1987:

Kansas University officials were receiving complaints this month about the foul odors frequently present near the KU power plant on Mount Oread. Emission levels from the plant, behind Stauffer-Flint Hall, recently had been shown to be not in compliance with Environmental Protection Agency regulations. KU officials had been notified April 10 by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment that emissions from two of the plant’s four boilers were out of compliance. The plant was designed to burn either fuel oil or natural gas, and the university had elected in recent months to use oil for reasons of economy, at a savings of $1,200 to $1,500 a day. Some local residents said that they had been suffering headaches since the presence of the sulphur-dioxide emissions had become noticeable.
