25 years ago: May sets construction record in Lawrence

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 12, 1987:

  • At their meeting on the previous night, the Lawrence school board had voted to purchase the former Sallie Mae building at 1919 Delaware for $316,000. The building was to become the new U.S.D. 497 Administrative Center later this summer. The Sallie Mae headquarters had moved to a new office facility in Lawrence earlier this year.
  • The previous month had set construction records in Lawrence. Boosted by several major projects, the total value of building permits issued in May had reached $20,211,684. Topping the list was a permit for the $6,759,268 Brandon Woods Retirement Complex at 1501 Inverness.The May report had also included a permit for construction of the Quail Run Elementary School , additions to Schwegler and Kennedy schools, and several permits for single-family and multiple-family housing.
  • On a visit to Berlin, President Reagan today stood before the concrete and barbed wire of the Berlin Wall and issued his now-famous challenge to Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev: “General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity, for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization, come here to this gate…. Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.”
