From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 10, 1912:

• “The official markers of the Golden Belt road arrived in Lawrence this morning and will soon be put into place along the road from Eudora to Perry. Lawrence has undertaken to provide signs for this much of the road and subscriptions have been taken for defraying the expenses.”
• “It is practically certain that a special car will be used by the Lawrence men who wish to go to Chicago to attend the Republican National Convention. It requires eighteen men to secure a special car and it seems certain that there will be that many go from here and nearby places. The most of these will be Lawrence men…. All Kansas men who wish to go are assured seats in the convention and the Lawrence men who make the trip will be sure to get in.”
• “The Playgrounds and Recreation Association of Lawrence was organized here last night for the purpose of promoting organized playing among the children of Lawrence. To head this organization the members of the association elected Dr. James Naismith as president…. The organization last night agreed to purchase all of the necessary apparatus for the equipment of the Learnard Field and South Park for play ground purposes. Learnard field will be devoted entirely to athletic sport for the boys while the park will be for girls and smaller children. The boys will have their track meets while the girls at the park will play outdoor games. An outdoor basketball court is also being planned for the girls.”
• “With the closing of school many of the large boys and young men who have been carrying the Journal-World during the school year, quit for the summer in order to work full time at other employment, and as a result fourteen new boys are on the routes for this week. The breaking in of new boys always is accompanied by neglected subscribers for a few days until the boys become familiar with their routes. It will therefore be a favor to the Journal-World if all subscribers failing to get their papers will call the office between 7 and 8 o’clock in the evening. At that time the circulator is at the office and will see that papers are taken to any who may have been missed by the carriers.”
