Youths sport unique styles in 4-H show

Fashion took to the catwalk at the Douglas County Fairgrounds on Tuesday evening in the annual 4-H Fashion Revue.

Morgan Leslie, 11, of Lawrence, models an outfit that she put together for the Douglas County 4-H Fashion Revue on Tuesday at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. The theme of this year’s show was “cruisin’ to the country fair.”

Nine-year-old Scout Meyers giggles after winning first place in her division during the Douglas County 4-H Fashion Revue on Tuesday at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. Boys and girls from 10 4-H groups showed off their selections of handmade and purchased outfits for the event, which had a “cruisin’ to the county fair” theme.

Boys and girls from 10 4-H groups — 54 out of the 171 total entries — strutted their stuff in selections of handmade and purchased outfits in front of a classic 1955 Plymouth and 1950 Studebaker to tunes from the musical “Grease.” It was all in good fun under the “cruisin’ to the county fair” theme.

Macey Frost, an 11-year-old in the Palmyra 4-H group, won a ribbon for her “Aztec-inspired” skirt, T-shirt and denim-jacket ensemble that featured a wooden necklace her grandmother gave her after a trip to South America. Macey is involved in several 4-H activities from photography (one of her favorites) to crafts to horse-showing. But the clothing selection project is fun because it gives her the opportunity to work inside with her friends, she said.

Macey’s outfit had a dressy-casual appeal, but Alexis Clark went formal. Her mom made her vibrant purple, blue and pink tulle dress, with a little help on the design side from Alexis, a 15-year-old in the Stull Busy Beavers. It was a winner, too, and she said she’s enjoyed her five years in the project because she gets the chance to show off her outfits.
