25 years ago: Thousands watch in Topeka as Hayden sworn in

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 12, 1987:

A crowd of nearly 4,000 spectators, including several local officials, stood under bright skies in 39-degree weather as Republican Mike Hayden became the state’s 41st governor today. The festivities included a 19-gun salute and a Kansas Air National Guard formation flying above the state capitol. Commenting on the event, John Solbach, D-Lawrence, said, “This is the only time in about 20 years that, except for one two-year period during that 20 years, that you have a governor who is the same party as the majority in both the house and Senate.”
