2nd Lecompton City Council member files for re-election

Another incumbent wants to continue serving on the Lecompton City Council.

Jennifer Smith, horticulture agent for K-State Research and Extension in Douglas County, filed paperwork early Tuesday afternoon to become a formal candidate for a third two-year term on the council.

The five-member council oversees municipal operations and governance for the community of 666 residents northwest of Lawrence.

Smith, 32, is the second candidate to file. Jimmy Wilkins, also an incumbent, formally entered the race Monday; another incumbent, Christy Mallonee, has not filed for re-election.

The filing deadline for candidates is noon Jan. 24 at the Douglas County Courthouse, 1100 Mass. The filing fee is $5.

The general election is April 3.
