From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 10, 1987:

• Television network ABC announced today that “The Day After,” the nuclear-aftermath movie filmed mainly in Lawrence, was to be shown in the Soviet Union. According to Brandon Stoddard, president of ABC Entertainment, the agreement provided for the TV movie to be shown twice, without editing or interruption. The network insisted on certain conditions, including the caveat that the Soviets could not add dialogue, Stoddard said. The two-hour, 17-minute program had been watched by 46 percent of U.S. households with an estimated audience of 100 million people when it had been broadcast in November 1983.
• The Harlem Globetrotters, featuring former Kansas University basketball standout Lynette Woodard, were scheduled to come to Lawrence on Feb. 10. Although the Globetrotters were to be in Kansas City today, KU faculty and staff were being urged to wait a month and see them in Lawrence because profits from the event were going toward KU’s non-revenue sports.
