Wichita ? Veritas Christian’s boys basketball team made a stop in the final seconds, and the Eagles defeated Topeka Heritage, 39-38, Saturday for third place in the KCAA state tournament.

“It was one of those shots that could have gone either way,” Veritas coach Gary Hammer said about Heritage’s final shot attempt, which bounced around the rim before falling away. “That’s what happens. We led almost the whole game. We held on at the end.”

Elijah Penny scored 17 points to lead Veritas, which finished 15-9. Nick Bennett added six points, and Andrew Currier and Thomas Bachert scored five points apiece.

Penny and Currier were named to the all-tournament team.

Veritas led by eight points at halftime and by six points entering the fourth quarter.

“We played a pretty good game,” Hammer said. “We’re just thrilled to death to have that third-place trophy. It was a good season for us. It was a good way to end, on a high note.”
