40 years ago: Northwest acreage to be annexed by city

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 16, 1972:

Following a week of controversy, the Lawrence City Commission voted unanimously today to annex 1,780 acres northwest of the (1972) city limits. The annexation, made over the vigorous protests of the Kansas Power and Light Co. and area residents, included the huge generating plant for the electric utility company. At the suggestion of Commissioner Nancy Hambleton, commissioners decided to allow a one-year delay before collecting city taxes from that area. About 85 people had crowded into the city hall meeting room to protest the annexation, applauding each of the 15 people who make comments to the commissioners.
