From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 12, 1987:

• Lt. Gov. Jack Walker today announced plans for a task force to study the risk of AIDS in Kansas and to make recommendations on the best way to approach the problem. “AIDS is clearly a life-threatening disease and a major public health issue,” Walker said. “Its impact on our society is and will continue to be devastating.”
• The early springlike weather had a lot of fans among area residents, but the plants were probably not among them, as a Kansas-type weather change was on the horizon. Recent warm conditions had caused sprouting of hyacinths and other spring-flowering bulbs, and buds on elms and maples and some shrubs had been swelling. Any fruit trees that had produced buds were now in danger of freeze damage. However, according to a local extension agent, the situation was “not a catastrophe at this point.”
