25 years ago: Multi-screen theater planned for south Iowa Street

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 6, 1987:

A city variance on parking regulations had helped clear the way for a proposed six-screen movie theater and retail complex on Iowa Street. Developers said that the site for the 1,400-seat movie complex and 27,440-square-foot retail shopping center was not quite large enough to provide the amount of parking required by city code. Members of the Lawrence Board of Zoning Appeals had unanimously approved the requested variance, reducing the number of parking spaces required from 420 to 389. No official site plan had yet been submitted to the BZA, and the preliminary plans needed a lot of work, according to a spokesman for the board.
