40 years ago: FBI investigates Overbrook bank robbery

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 27, 1972:

FBI agents were combing the area around Overbrook today, seeking clues to an overnight burglary at the Kansas State Bank. Three or four men were reported to have burglarized the bank sometime during the night, breaking into some safety deposit boxes but failing in their attempt to gain entry to the safe, where the bulk of the bank’s money was located. The burglars had entered the building through a side door leading to the Masonic Lodge on the second floor. They had apparently cut one hole through the floor of the Lodge’s main meeting room and a second hole through the top of the concrete roof of the vault below. Bank vice president John Wilhite said today that the bank’s alarm system was antiquated and did not guard for entry from the lodge above the bank. A new bank building was under construction at that time, across the street from the old building.
