25 years ago: Donors raise complaints about agency’s holiday gift distribution

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 22, 1987:

Member agencies of the Lawrence Holiday Bureau said today that they were planning to review some policies before next year’s cycle of donations began. A complaint last week had surfaced over the possible mishandling of items donated by a group to a Lawrence family in need. The 23 donors, all Lawrence High School cafeteria employees, had banded together to “adopt” a family for the holidays through Penn House. After accidentally learning the identity of the family (information usually kept anonymous), the workers reported that the family had not received all of the items that had been donated. Penn House officials acknowledged some problems with the handling of the donations — for example, a gift certificate which they said had possibly slipped out of its envelope and which was found later — but on the whole, they denied the LHS group’s accusation that “somebody opened those boxes and took stuff out.”
