As of Wednesday afternoon, the weather forecast still calls for a winter storm to come through Lawrence roughly between midnight and 6 a.m. Thursday.

Forecasters expect rain to change over into snow between midnight and 2 a.m., with perhaps a bit of sleet in between, said Kris Sanders, a meteorologist in the National Weather Service office in Topeka. The expected total: 2 to 4 inches.

A winter weather advisory will be in effect from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m.

“Still the same story,” Sanders said at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. “Nothing much has changed.”

Sanders said there had been a bit of scattered rain in the area so far today, and more rain is expected later tonight before snow begins. And strong winds, with gusts up to 45 mph, are still in store overnight, which could create dangerous conditions combined with the snow.

Temperatures should dip into the mid-20s, Sanders said, with wind chills perhaps reaching the single digits.

The storm should be largely finished by Thursday morning, he said, though still-strong winds may be blowing some snow around in Lawrence.
