25 years ago: Thousands attend KU Vespers at Hoch Auditorium

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 8, 1987:

  • At least 6,300 people had flocked to Hoch Auditorium to listen to two concerts of traditional Christmas music at Kansas University’s annual Vespers program this past Sunday. It had been standing room only at the evening concert, according to Roger Stoner, assistant chair for the department of music and dance, and the total from donations from the afternoon and evening performances was $3,683. The Vespers program, with 63 seasons now behind it, helped fund scholarships for music students.
  • A congressional aide in Washington today said that he had seen the list of finalists for the $4.4 billion super collider project and that Kansas was not on it. The aide, confirming reports in two metropolitan newspapers, said that Illinois, Utah, New Mexico, Colorado, Texas, and North Carolina were in the final running; however, Energy Department officials denied that finalists had been selected.
