40 years ago: Officials discuss fire safety of city housing

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 5, 1972:

  • Recent fires in other U.S. cities had brought attention to fire safety in high-rise residences here. Fire protection in local buildings was considered generally safe by those concerned, but there was some discussion about possible future requirements such as sprinkler systems and smoke detectors. Lawrence Fire Chief F. C. Sanders and chief building inspector Ken Jorgensen both favored these updates, with Sanders adding that the city also needed more fire inspectors and regular inspections in more than just the downtown area.
  • A winter storm was moving through Kansas today, but according to National Weather Service forecasts, the worst was yet to come for the Lawrence area. Snow was expected to become heavy tonight, with accumulations of four to six inches, and temperatures were expected to spend most of the week in the range of five below zero to 10 above.
