From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 2, 1987:

• Lawrence taverns had committed fewer than half the fire code violations that they had a year earlier, according to city fire marshal Rich Barr. Barr said that fire officials had given fewer than 10 fire code tickets to private clubs and taverns since Nov, 4, 1986. That date was significant because it marked the city’s adoption of a twelvefold increase in maximum fines. However, Barr added, the single-digit violation number was probably better than it sounded because officials had stopped giving warnings to frequent code abusers. Shortly before the new fines were instituted, fire inspectors had often given several warnings before issuing tickets. The most common violations from the previous year were bars that were crowded over capacity limits and blocking of exits in public areas.
• The average mean temperature in the month just ended was 3.9 degrees above normal, according to statistics provided by the Kansas University weather service. The highest temperature recorded in November 1987 had been 78 degrees on Nov. 3, and the lowest, 27 degrees, on Nov. 10.
