From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 15, 1972:

• The southeast corner of Seventh and Vermont streets was being eyed for a possible parking lot. Noting that additional parking would be useful for the new library as well as for the northern end of the business district, City Manager Buford Watson added that this appeared to be the most opportune time for the city to purchase the property. Acquisition, demolition of two buildings, and construction was expected to cost a maximum of $76,000, according to an ordinance to be introduced at the next City Commission meeting.
• Seven boys and three girls from Lawrence High School had succeeded this week in making the climb to the top of Long’s Peak, the highest mountain in the Rocky Mountain National Park. The students were taking part in Mountain Ventures, a new LHS summer course, under the guidance of biology teacher Ken Highfill. During the ascent, the students had climbed from an altitude of 7,640 feet to 14,256 feet.
