• A quilt sewn by more than 80 volunteers had won second place at the Douglas County Free Fair. The quilt, made to commemorate the United Way’s 100th anniversary in the United States, had been stitched with the held of local business owners and politicians, including Sen. Wint Winter Jr., R-Lawrence, and Rep. Jessie Branson, D-Lawrence.
• Lawrence’s Special Olympian Barbara McEldowney and her partner Tal Donlinger, Salina, had won the gold medal in doubles tennis at the International Special Summer Olympic Games this week at Notre Dame University.
• Fast-food giant McDonald’s announced today a plan to phase out the use in the United States of foam containers manufactured with chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). Scientists claimed that CFCs were causing the destruction of the ozone layer, and the Reagan administration had been working with other industrialized nations to decrease CFC production by as much as 95 percent worldwide.
