From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 11, 1912:

• “The first definite action toward organized play on the school grounds was taken this afternoon when the goals for the basketball courts were put in place at Pinckney school. Other apparatus is to be secured as soon as possible and the grounds of Pinckney school to be made an ideal play ground for the pupils of the school. This is to be an experiment and if it proves satisfactory, as it no doubt will, similar work will be done at the other schools. Outdoor basketball has never been played here but judging from the interest taken here this winter in the indoor game it will be as popular outside on the school grounds. There are to be two courts on the ground, one for boys and the other for girls, and are to be under the supervision of the teachers of the school.”
• “Because she ate a sample of medicine thrown in at her parents’ home, Mabel Ledabore, two years old, is very ill at the home of her parents, 1240 New Jersey street. Yesterday the child picked up a sample of something thrown in at the house and after eating it was taken ill. Later she fainted and was unconscious for two hours. Her condition was serious.”
• “The regular monthly board meeting of the Directors of the Y.M.C.A. was held yesterday afternoon. At this time it was decided that the pool will be opened this summer to the girls if a class of thirty can be secured. The pool was open last year between April 15 and September 15 from 2 to 5 on Wednesday afternoon and this same arrangement will be made this year if there is sufficient demand for it on the part of the girls.”
