Victim of 2011 Lawrence robberies testifies at trial

The victim of two 2011 Lawrence robberies on Monday identified a 23-year-old Franklin County man as a participant in both incidents.

Jurors heard opening testimony Monday in the trial of Mikael Englund, of Richmond, whom prosecutors accuse of acting with others to rob Austin Longhurst in January and March of 2011 at Longhurst’s apartment in the 800 block of Hilltop Drive.

Longhurst told jurors Friday that he recognized Englund as a participant in both robberies. He said Englund and co-defendant Trenton Rowsey, an Ottawa man who has pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 32 months in prison in the case, used a handgun to rob him of marijuana and other items.

He alleged that in a second robbery about two months later, he was beaten by Englund and two other men, when they stole money and other items from him. A juvenile and another man, Dustin A. Smith, 24, also of Richmond, have entered pleas and are serving time for the second robbery.

Englund’s trial will continue Tuesday in Douglas County District Court.
