Heard on the Hill: Big Jay (illegally) takes a ride down Jayhawk Boulevard; nearby business school gets a big financial boost; many more KU entities join Twitter

Your daily dose of news, notes and links from around Kansas University.

• A University Daily Kansan photographer was around to catch KU’s beloved mascot Big Jay riding illegally down Jayhawk Boulevard on the top of a car.

They’ve got a few photos there, including one (if you follow the link in the story) of Big Jay “flashing” a few fans on the street.

The Kansan reported that Big Jay’s official handlers didn’t have any knowledge of the event.

I haven’t heard anything in the way of ramifications from this event yet, but suffice it to say, I don’t think that it will be good if they catch who’s responsible.

• The University of Missouri-Kansas City’s School of Business was the beneficiary of a large donation courtesy of Henry Bloch, founder of tax preparation firm H&R Block.

Bloch donated $32 million to the school that bears his name.

An article in the Kansas City Star pointed out that the UMKC School of Business also earned a mention in the Princeton Review’s “best of” list for colleges and universities.

The UMKC school’s entrepreneurship programs also ranked well. The undergraduate program ranked 14th and its graduate program ranked 21st in 2011 on the Princeton Review’s list.

That’s according to a UMKC press release. The full rankings, as best as I can tell, aren’t available publicly yet (they were released last year on Sept. 21). When they are, I’ll tell you how KU fared. Or if I’m wrong, and the rankings are out there, surely some wise Heard on the Hill commenter will let me (and all of you) know at the same time.

• I’ve continued to build up the wide array of KU entities that have Twitter accounts.

The most recent one that’s come to my attention is the KU Cheerleading squad.

Other recent additions to my sphere of reference have been the KU Student Senate, the KU Mortar Board (an honors society) and the Hall Center for the Humanities (which I believe just leapt onto the Twitter scene very recentlty).

If you know of any good KU twitterers, feel free to let me know. I’m thinking of compiling a big master list sometime, so others can hop on board.
