Heritage Conservation Council to consider grant applications

The county’s Heritage Conservation Council will meet Thursday to discuss and possibly decide how to trim nearly $940,000 in requests down to $350,000 in recommendations for grants designated for preserving natural and cultural heritage.

Three groups are seeking “major” grants for projects expected to cost more than $105,000:

• Douglas County Historical Society, $108,000 for continued development of a permanent exhibit for Watkins Community Museum of History, 1047 Mass.

• Black Jack Battlefield Trust, $163,000 for restoration the Robert Hall Pearson Farmhouse at the battlefield east of Baldwin City.

• Eudora Area Historical Society, $180,000 for renovation of 720 and 722 Main St. into a Eudora Community Museum.

Fifteen smaller projects account for the balance of grant requests.

Council members, who will meet 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Douglas County Courthouse, 1100 Mass., plan to forward their recommendations to county commissioners in November.
