40 years ago: Board of Regents puts restrictions on Kansas Union beer sales

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 15, 1971:

  • At a meeting today, members of the Kansas Board of Regents voted to prohibit their institutions from general selling of cereal malt beverages. Consumption of such beverages were to be permitted “under authorized and appropriately controlled conditions and regulations” to be determined by the administration of each school. The Lawrence City Commission had granted a cereal malt beverage license to the Kansas University student union, but the beer would now be sold only in two locations in the union and under restricted conditions.
  • KU football coach Don Fambrough was pictured giving a pep talk to a crowd at a rally to kick off the Lawrence United Fund drive. Emcee Max Falkenstien, pom-pon girls from KU, and the Gaslight Gang Dixieland band were also in the group at Ninth and Massachusetts.
