Mass. Street Chic: Extend your summer wardrobe into fall

Adjusting your wardrobe from season to season can be tricky. As temperatures wobble back and forth, be prepared to conquer any weather with these fall transition pieces. Not only are the items on the list below wardrobe essentials, they are also versatile pieces — perfect for extending your warm-weather apparel and perfect for those looking to travel with minimal baggage.

Tights and leggings

Layer tights or leggings under your skirts and dresses, or, on hotter days, pull on a pair of knee-length socks. Regardless of the temperature, proper hosiery is a must this fall.

Skinny and medium-width belts

You don’t have to freeze in order to maintain your dress shape or feminine silhouette. Cinch your lightweight cardigans with a skinny belt in the color of your choice. Another option? Adjust your favorite boyfriend blazer with a wider belt — yes, it’s ok to wear a belt on the outside of a jacket!

Felt fedora

Sometimes, a dreary fall day requires just a touch more warmth for your head and ears. Pick out a bright fedora, or adorn your favorite hat shape with a colorful ribbon, feathers or a brooch. I like cotton or felt fabrics for fall because they are just the right weight — not too heavy and not too light, like a summer fedora made of straw. Also, whenever you are all bundled up, getting your hair up and off your face is a good way to mix-up your daily look, exposing your neckline and creating a new silhouette.

Medium-weight scarf

In weather that is too hot for a jacket and too cool to go without, a scarf is the perfect alternative. Scarves easily add dimension to your outfit, doubling as accessories. And if you end up too hot while wearing yours, it can easily be tied onto your purse handle or tucked into your purse.

Ankle boots

Boots are the most versatile fall footwear. I like ankle boots because they aren’t as heavy — they feel less bulky, so oftentimes they are also my footwear of choice with dresses, worn with or without stockings.

Outerwear essentials

Lightweight jackets, cardigans, blazers are all must-haves for fall. As I mentioned earlier, they are key for extending your wardrobe into the new season, and they are easily adapted from outfit to outfit with the simple addition of a belt.

My two last fall shopping recommendations? A good, compact umbrella and an oversized purse to store any of the essentials from above!
