From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 9, 1971:

• Southwestern Bell Telephone was filing an application for the largest rate increase that had ever been sought from the Kansas Corporation Commission. Dale Saffels, chair of the commission, said that the company, which served more than 600,000 telephones in Kansas, was applying for a $14.7 million a year increase in Kansas rates. According to local manager Ed Carter, increases per month for Lawrence would average $1.10 for residents and $2.60 for businesses.
• Constant Construction Co. of Lawrence had been awarded a $589,925 contract for new construction at Haskell Indian Junior College. The company was to begin building a one-story electronics building on the south side of campus. Completion was expected to be in late August. The building was to contain six classrooms and six laboratories for electronics and electrician programs.
