40 years ago: Clinton Lake money awaiting approval in Washington

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 8, 1971:

  • A bill that was to send $1.8 million to this area for the partial construction of Clinton Lake was “sitting somewhere on President Nixon’s desk” awaiting his signature. Another bill, now in Congress, was to provide another $2.2 million for the lake. If approved, the money would be used by the Corps of Engineers for land acquisition and dam construction at the proposed lake site.
  • A 30-by-30 foot metal classroom building at Central Junior High School, 14th and Massachusetts, had been damaged by fire and vandalism. Police reported that the building had been entered before the fire was set, as books and other items had been found damaged and thrown about the room.
  • Lawrence merchants were being warned to stay alert for counterfeit $20 bills. The bills, which had been sighted in Topeka, had not yet surfaced in Lawrence.
