From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 4, 1911:

“One day this week some real excitement was started north of the city when word was sent to town that two men were out there on a farm digging for a buried treasure. Now this is not as unreasonable as it may seem, for there are still stories float of the days when treasures were buried north of town. At that time a gang of outlaws made this part of the country their field for operations. Their headquarters was in an old house on a farm owned by Will Spalding about seven miles north of the city. All of these outlaws but one are supposed to have been killed, but when the pursuit began, they buried their treasure. This has never been found and somewhere the ‘pot of gold at the end of the rainbow’ is supposed to be north of town…. This week two strangers appeared on this farm and began digging for this treasure. Later they disappeared and it is not known from where they came. Anyway it brings a touch of adventure, of the mysterious to the workaday world and brings to mind Captain Kidd and the other treasure stories of the world.”
