KU gets $1.6 million grant to better education for English learners

Kansas University has received a five-year, $1.6 million grant to improve education for students learning English.

The grant, from the Office of English Language Acquisition and the U.S. Department of Education, will go to KU’s Institute for Educational Research and Public Service in the School of Education.

The money will benefit educators in Topeka Public Schools and KU students looking to add an endorsement to their license upon graduation.

“The goal is not to make more (English as a Second Language) teachers,” said Stephanie Christenot, project coordinator at the institute. “We want to help equip content-area teachers who have English learners in their classrooms. Teachers should feel prepared to address the educational needs of all their students, including students learning English.”
