25 years ago: Commissioners say obscenity law due for overhaul

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 20, 1986:

  • The current obscenity law in Lawrence was under review. City commissioners at a recent meeting had decided to overhaul the entire ordinance, written in 1979, mostly because it did not address the sale or rental of pornographic video cassettes to minors. Lawrence resident Jim Mullins had presented a petition signed by more than 400 people to the commission last monh asking the city to clearly prohibit minors from buying or renting R- or X-rated videos.
  • Also under consideration was a proposed city ordinance which would put limits on smoking in the workplace and would also limit smoking in many public places.
