Club news for November 19, 2011

The University Bridge Club announces results of its Nov. 12 meeting with hosts Tom and Cathy Waller.

Blue winners: Steven Bogler, first; Bebe Huxtable, second; Virginia Williams, third; Roz Zimmerer, fourth; and Cathy Stephens, fifth.

Pink winners: Willi Stark, first; Karen Zimmerer, second; Cathy Waller, third; Myrna Ikenberry, fourth; and Hazel Stellmacher, fifth.

Over the Rainbow Doll Club met Nov. 10 at the home of LouAnn Burgess. Members finalized plans for their upcoming Christmas Party at the Three Sisters’ Inn in Baldwin City. The club dolls came dressed in their pajamas and brought teddy bears and blankets for their pj party. Plans for the Girl Scout badge earning session in January were discussed and members volunteered for assignments. Members were shown examples and received instructions concerning the next step in completing their doll boxes presented by Val Fittell and Burgess. The door prize was won by Barbara Walden.

Officials this week named the Lawrence Altrusa Club a Distinguished 2011-2012 Club of worldwide Altrusa International. Altrusa International is a professional women’s service organization.

Chris Day, president of Lawrence’s Altrusa Club, was notified of the recognition in a letter from Donna Johnson, 2011-2013 past international president of the organization.

In the letter, Johnson cited the local chapter’s excellence in service, membership, programming, leadership, communications and foundation activities.

The Lawrence Altrusa Club received a Distinguished Club Banner Patch Award as part of the designation. The club, which focuses much of its service on literacy, has participated in city-wide reading programs, and club members volunteer in reading programs at New York School.

The Wednesday Afternoon Duplicate Bridge Club’s game of Nov. 3 was directed by Chris Lane. North-South winners were Judy Hildreth and Lois Clark, first in A; Dave Chipman and Ed Howard, second in A; Vince Nordberg and Steven Vossler, third in A; Paul Heitzman and David Piro, fourth in A; Catherine Blumenfeld and Grant Sutton, first in B; Robert Weaver and Adelaide Nyquist, second in B; and Margrete Hartman and Albert Ballard, first in C.

East-West winners were Bobby Patton and Mark Osborn, first in A and B; Klee Zaricky and John Oxley, second in A; Eldon Herd and Shari Krentzel, third in A; Mary Mertz and Ann Thompson, fourth in A and second in B; and Mary Locnishar and Wanna Roszel, third in B and first in C.

The Thursday Morning Mentor Duplicate Bridge Club’s game of Nov. 10 was directed by Chris Lane. Winners were Mary Locniskar and Rich Bryan, first; Virginia Seaver and Barbara McCorkle, second; and Doris Sindt and Chris Lane, third.

The Friday Afternoon Duplicate Bridge Club’s game of Nov. 11 was directed by Virginia Seaver. North-South winners were Steven Vossler and Larry Weatherholt, first in A; Shirley Reese and Yvonne Hedges, second in A and first in B; Bobby Patton and Eleanor Patton, third in A, second in B and first in C; Eldon Herd and Jean Otney, fourth in A; and Catherine Blumenfeld and Ann Thompson, second in C.

East-West winners were Mark Osborn and Lois Clark, first in A and B; Jack Flickinger and Dick Shaffer, second in A and B, and first in C; Shari Krentzel and Debbie Bettinger, third in A; and David Piro and Paul Heitzman, fourth in A.

The Monday Evening Duplicate Bridge Club’s game of Nov. 14 was directed by Virginia Seaver. Ed Howard and James Masilamani tied for first in A with Larry Weatherholt and Steven Vossler; other winners were John Hickey and James Kelley, third in A and first in B; Virginia Hamilton and Robert Huffman, fourth in A and second in B; and Chris Lane and Emily Foster, third in B.
