40 years ago: Huge new Kresge warehouse begins to receive freight

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 9, 1971:

  • The $7 million S. S. Kresge distribution center in northwest Lawrence had begun to receive freight on Nov. 1. Warehouse manager R. D. Jacob said that he expected the warehouse to be filled before the end of the year. The 45,000 cartons received so far had filled less than five percent of the available space in the massive 25-acre building, which was the largest in Lawrence and one of the largest in Kansas.
  • The 1971 Lawrence United Fund office was reporting that they had reached 77 percent of their yearly goal on this, the 11th day of the fund drive. The office had received $116,209 as of this morning; the goal for the year was $150,055. Officials for the group stressed that “prompt and generous action” was vital if the goal was to be reached.
